Legal Notice: Parody, Satire & Protected Expression

All designs, imagery, and text produced by Quietly Loud Prints ("QLP") are works of parody, satire, commentary, and artistic expression. They are not statements of fact, and no reasonable viewer should construe them as such. Any resemblance to real individuals, organizations, brands, or events is used for the purpose of commentary, criticism, or satire on matters of public concern.

Applicable Legal Protections

This expression is protected under multiple, overlapping bodies of U.S. law, including:

  • First Amendment, U.S. Constitution — protects freedom of speech and of the press, including political satire, parody, and criticism of public figures and institutions as core, protected expression.
  • Fair Use Doctrine, 17 U.S.C. § 107 — permits transformative use of copyrighted material for purposes of parody and commentary (Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., 510 U.S. 569 (1994)).
  • Trademark Parody & Fair Use, 15 U.S.C. § 1125(c)(3)(A)(ii); Rogers v. Grimaldi, 875 F.2d 994 (2d Cir. 1989) — protects expressive, non-confusing parodic use of trademarks and logos in artistic and commentary contexts.
  • Opinion & Satire Doctrine in Defamation Law — New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964); Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, 485 U.S. 46 (1988) — protects satirical and opinion-based commentary on public figures and public issues, even when sharp, from defamation and emotional-distress claims.
  • Oregon Anti-SLAPP Statute, ORS 31.150–31.155 — QLP is based and operates in Oregon, which has one of the stronger state anti-SLAPP laws in the country; it allows early dismissal (a "special motion to strike") and attorney fee recovery against lawsuits filed to punish or chill speech on matters of public interest.

No Endorsement of Violence

QLP does not condone, encourage, promote, or incite violence, illegal activity, or harm against any person or group, of any kind, under any circumstance. Our work is commentary and satire — nothing more, nothing less.

QLP reserves the right to update this notice and its designs at any time. 

Quietly Loud Prints exists to speak plainly when plain speech is under pressure. We intend to keep doing that — loudly, quietly, and well within our rights.
