Sexual-assault cases do not all end the same way.
One person may face a civil judgment. Another may face no charge. Someone else may be acquitted.
Those differences matter. We should never turn an allegation into a proven fact.
We also should not erase a documented finding because it hurts a political team.
Public trust needs honesty. So does justice.
The Short Version
- Donald Trump has a final civil judgment for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll.
- A House committee found substantial evidence that Matt Gaetz broke Florida’s statutory-rape law.
- Federal prosecutors did not charge Gaetz.
- Brett Kavanaugh and Roy Moore denied allegations that produced no sexual-assault judgment.
- Christian Ziegler and Brian Ellis were investigated but not charged.
- T. Scott Muschany faced a criminal trial and was acquitted.
These endings are not interchangeable. Facts should make accountability stronger, not sloppier.
What the Legal Words Mean
Civil liability means a claim was proved in a civil court. It is not a criminal conviction.
Substantial evidence is an official finding. It is not a criminal jury verdict.

No charge means prosecutors filed no criminal case.
Acquittal means prosecutors failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Donald Trump: A Final Civil Judgment

Writer E. Jean Carroll said Trump attacked her during the 1990s. Trump denied her account.
In May 2023, a federal jury found Trump civilly liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
The jury awarded Carroll $5 million. It did not return a criminal conviction.
The Supreme Court denied Trump’s appeal on June 29, 2026. Carroll later received the judgment and interest.
A separate jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million for earlier defamatory statements. The Second Circuit left that award in place in April 2026. A Supreme Court request remained pending at the fact-check date.
Republicans still nominated Trump in 2024. He returned to office in 2025.

A party may reject a court’s reasoning. It cannot call this an untested allegation.

Matt Gaetz: An Ethics Finding, but No Charge

The Justice Department investigated Matt Gaetz. Prosecutors ended that investigation without filing charges.
Gaetz denied wrongdoing.
The bipartisan House Ethics Committee ran a separate investigation. Its December 2024 report found substantial evidence of several violations.
The committee found substantial evidence that Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old in 2017.
It said this conduct violated Florida’s statutory-rape law. The committee did not find enough evidence for federal sex trafficking.
This was an ethics finding, not a criminal conviction. Both parts belong in the record.
Other Cases Had Different Endings
- Brett Kavanaugh: He denied sexual-assault allegations during his 2018 Supreme Court confirmation. The FBI gathered information but made no legal ruling. A 2024 Senate report criticized the investigation’s limits. No criminal or civil judgment established the allegations.
- Roy Moore: Moore denied allegations involving women and teenage girls. No criminal charge or sexual-assault judgment followed. In 2022, a jury found neither Moore nor accuser Leigh Corfman liable for defamation.
- Christian Ziegler: Police investigated a sexual-battery allegation. Prosecutors filed no charges. Florida Republicans removed him as state party chair.
- Brian Ellis: The Pennsylvania lawmaker resigned during an investigation. A grand jury later recommended no charges.
- T. Scott Muschany: The former Missouri lawmaker went to trial in 2009. A jury found him not guilty.
Accountability Is More Than Prison
Parties often wait for a criminal conviction before acting. That bar is far too low.
Political groups choose candidates, leaders, judges, and committee chairs. They can demand better conduct.
No one is owed public power. No party is owed our silence.

That idea also drives our Political Stickers collection. Mockery can expose excuses that polite language hides.

We Have a Civic Duty to Care
Most people do not have lawyers, party machines, or national platforms.
They still deserve leaders who respect consent, truth, and public trust.
Social democracy starts with a simple promise. Public power should serve ordinary people.
That means listening carefully. It also means using honest legal words.
Teach those habits early. Our Teachers & Students collection supports curiosity, reading, and speaking up.
We can care about survivors and protect due process. We must do both.
We have to be able to do better.
Quick Questions
Was Donald Trump criminally convicted in the Carroll case?
No. A civil jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
Was Matt Gaetz charged?
No. Federal prosecutors filed no charge. A House committee later made separate ethics findings.
Does no charge prove an allegation was false?
No. It means prosecutors did not bring a criminal case.
Why include an acquittal?
Because the ending matters. Honest records must report acquittals as clearly as findings against someone.
